Orthotropic Tensor Averaging Model for Fiber-filled composite property calculation (纤维加强塑料的各向异性材性的张量平均模型)

Abstract:

Chopped fiber filled polymer composite material is widely used in the injection molded products. The composite properties which possess anisotropic nature have a direct influence on the produce-induced residual stress and the warpage of the molded part, as well as the structural performance. This paper presents a composite property calculation method based on fiber orientation tensor and fiber breakage models, micro-mechanics models including coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE) models, closure approximation models, and orientation average models. The nine parameters of orthotropic orientation tensor averaging model are derived based on Tandon-Weng’s fully-aligned model and 2D-random model; Two closure approximation models, orthotropic bilinear model and orthotropic biquadratic model, are developed to work with the 9-parameter orthotropic orientation averaging model, and it is found the 9-parameter averaging model is much more accurate than the commonly used 5-parameter Advani-Tucker model based on the original Cintra-Tucker orthotropic fitted models.


Short Bio:

Dr. Xiaoshi Stone Jin was one of DUT alumni who graduated in 1982 and obtained MEng degree in 1985 in Department of Engineering Mechanics. After his PhD and a Post-Doc work in University of Glasgow, U.K., Dr. Jin went to Cornell University for his 2nd Post-Doc Fellowship. His solid knowledge and basic training in DUT on structural mechanics and CFD, as well as the long R&D experience in developing and applications of CFD codes for hypersonic turbulence flow and non-Newtonian polymer flow have made him a simulation expert in injection molding and polymer composite material scientist. He was the solver manager in MOLDFLOW Ithaca for 10 years and later became a senior principal research engineer in the commercial software company, C-MOLD -> Moldflow -> Autodesk. One of his key contributions was the development and implementation of CRIMS (Corrected Residual In-Mold Stress) model which laid the foundation of Moldflow for accurate warpage prediction of injection molded part and a high percentage of the market share in the simulation of injection molding.

A father of two boys, Dr. Jin was one of the original founders and is still an active member of Cornell Badminton Club.
