Dr. Riaz Akhtar is currently working in the School of Engineering at the University of Liverpool and is the Programme Director for the Biomedical Engineering Masters degree. He is based within the Biomechanical Engineering research group. His research largely focusses on structure-property relationships in ageing and diseased soft tissues at the nano- and micron- level. He has expertise in nanomechanics and has extensive experience with nanoindentation and atomic force microscopy. His work spans a number of biomaterials and tissues including hydrogels, cardiovascular tissues and skin. He has published over 40 papers many in leading Biomaterials journals and Materials Science, and has been elected a Council Member of the Artery Society, a European cardiovascular society.
