报告人介绍:Dr. Hung Tao Shen is the Distinguished Research Professor in Hydraulic Engineering at Clarkson University. Professor Shen is an internationally recognized researcher in the hydraulics of cold regions. He introduced an analytical framework for studying river ice processes and developed the transport capacity theory for frazil ice jams/hanging dams and the theory on river ice dynamics and ice jams. His research group has developed comprehensive computer models for river processes, including thermal-ice and sediment transport, which today are a key cornerstone of the river ice field.
报告内容:Mechanical breakup is the pre-mature breakup of a relatively competent ice cover before the thermal meltout. Ice jams following the mechanical breakup of river ice cover can cause severe flooding with rapidly increasing stages often higher than those associated with ice-free conditions. This presentation will review the development of mechanical breakup theories, modeling of ice jam processes, and associated flooding. Since the weather during the breakup time often changes rapidly, forecasting in a Nowcasting mode for possible river ice breakup and ice jam flooding is needed for flood warnings and emergency operations. A physically based method for rapidly forecasting ice cover breakup and ice jam flooding will be discussed.
