Title: Academician, Professor

Affiliation: Department of Engineering Mechanics

Curriculum Vitae:

Professor CHENG, famous scientist of engineering mechanics and computational mechanics, was born in SuZhou, JiangSu Province, China in 1941. He graduated from Peking University, Beijing, China in 1964 and received Ph.D. from Department of Solid Mechanics, Technical University of Denmark, Denmark in 1980. He was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in 1995 and served President of Dalian University of Technology (DUT) during 1995-2006. At present he is a member of Presidium of the CAS Academic Division, the Vice Chairman of Chinese Association of Mechanics, Congress Committee member of International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM), a member of Executive Committee for International Society for Structural and Multi-disciplinary Optimization. He was awarded the title of an Honorary Doctor respectively by Aaborg University of Denmark in 1999 and by University of Liege of Belgium in 2000. He takes on the chief-editor of Chinese Journal of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics and ACTA Mechanica Sinica, the editorship for five domestic journals and four internationals such as Engineering Optimization, Structural Optimization, Computational Structural Engineering and Computer & Structures. He presented a sectional lecture at 16th congress of IUTAM in 1996(45 minutes).

Professor Cheng specializes in engineering mechanics, computational mechanics and research on structural optimization. In the 1970s, he was devoted to the study of the group theory of structural analysis, and applied it successfully to the standardized design of supporting frames of water towels. He has participated in development of an algorithm and computer program for the study of the forced vibration of turbine foundation, which has been adopted by many design institutes and corresponding Chinese design code. His study of solid elastic plates co-authored with Prof. Niels Olhoff during his Ph.D study in 1978-1980 has been esteemed as the pioneering work of the modern structural topology optimization. In 1980s he studied semi-analytic sensitivity analysis. And pointed out the source of abnormal error of the method and suggested that the abnormal error could be suppressed by reducing the rigid body rotation at element level. This idea has been confirmed and effectively applied in literatures. In the structural topology optimization, he has discovered that the essence of singular optimal solution in truss topology optimization subject to stress constraint is the discontinuity of the constraint function and come up with a correct shape of feasible domain. On this basis, he and Prof. Xue Guo, his former Ph.D. student, has put forward a relaxation algorithm to the singular optimal solution, which has been mentioned in literature as a milestone contribution to the issue.

Professor Cheng has published more than 200 treatises, translated 2 books and authored or co-authored 7 books in Chinese. He has won the second prize of the National Achievements of Natural Sciences in 1992 and 2006 etc.

He has supervised more than 20 Ph.D and 20 Master students, respectively. His recent interest is the theory and method of structural optimization, reliability of large rotating bladed disk and ultra-light structure design.
