Title: Professor

Affiliation: Department of Engineering Mechanics

Curriculum Vitae:

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Hongwu Zhang was born in 1964. He graduated from Dalian University of Technology(DUT) in 1985 and received his PhD at University of Hannover, Germany in 2000. He works now as a chair professor of Changjiang Scholars at DUT, director of State Key Laboratory of Structural Analysis for Industrial Equipment and dean of Faculty of Vehicle Engineering and Mechanics, DUT. He is the winner of the National Natural Science Funds for Distinguished Young Scholars of China in 2002, the winner of the Youth Scientific Award of Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics(CSTAM) in 1998 and 2005, the winner of the National New Century Talents Project in 2004, the winner of the Hundreds Talented Youth Project of Liaoning Province in 1999, the winner of the Excellent Scholars Award at Universities of Liaoning Province in 2003, the winner of the Prize of the Top Ten Outstanding Youth People of Dalian City in 2005 and the winner of the Prize of the Government's Special Subsidy by State Council of China in 2006.

Professor Zhang's principle research fields include Computational Engineering and Science, Coupled Multifield Analysis of Multiphase Materials, Computational Nano- and Bio- Mechanics, and CAE Software Development and Application. His most significant contributions to the advancement of knowledge in his academic research field include the development of the stress update algorithm and the tangent operator for the numerical computation of multiphase porous media with generalized plasticity model, the establishment of a theoretical frame including uniqueness analysis, critical modulus, internal length scale, and gradient- and rate-dependent models for strain localization analysis of saturated and partially saturated porous media, the investigation of a combined programming and iteration method for 3D contact analysis and a parametric quadratic programming algorithm for gradient dependent plastic model and Voronoi element computation. His research work has been internationally recognized and cited by many researchers in the world. The paper (Zhang H.W., Heeres O.M., de Borst R., Schrefler B.A., Engineering Computations, 18(1/2), 314-336, 2001) gained Literati Club 2002 Highly Commended Award. As a research team leader at DUT, Prof. Zhang has been working on the developing of the finite element analysis and design optimization software system JIFEX for twenty years. His research achievements have been successfully applied to solve the engineering problems such as the strength analysis and design optimization of aerospace structures, turbo machinery, high-speed and heavy-haul train, diesel engine body, turbocharger, connecting rod structure, wheel axle, wheel-rail and gear, etc. Recently his research work has been extended to computational nano- and bio-mechanics. He has published over 200 papers on journals and more than 80 papers on conference proceedings, and 3 books as author or co-author.

Prof. Zhang is an associate editor-in-chief of Chinese Journal of Computational Mechanics. He serves on editorial boards of 6 national and international journals. He is member of the general council of International Association for Computational Mechanics (IACM) and Member of the Executive Council of CSTAM, chairman of Chinese Association of Computational Mechanics, member of Association of Rational Mechanics and Mathematical Methods of CSTAM and member of the Working Group of Foreign Exchanges and Cooperation of CSTAM.

Prof. Zhang has won a great deal of awards, including two Important Achievement Awards of the National "8th Five-year" Major Science and Technology Investigation in 1995, a CAD Software Development Award of the first class by the Ministry of Science and Technology of China in 1995, a CAD Software Development Award of the second class by the Ministry of Science and Technology of China in 1995, two Science and Technology Progress Awards of the second class by the Ministry of Education of China in 1998 and 1999, a Science and Technology Progress Award of the third class by Liaoning Province in 1999, two Computer Software Development and Application Awards of the first class by Dalian City in 1998 and 2000, a Science and Technology Progress Award of the second class by Liaoning Province in 2005 and a Natural Science Award of the second class by the Ministry of Education of China in 2007.
